ASTM A490 Heavy Hex Bolts

Note: In 2016, specification A325 was officially withdrawn by ASTM and replaced by ASTM F3125. Though the standard has changed to F3125, a few basic things remain the same. Bolt head markings will remain as they were, and Type 1 and Type 3 remain the same way to distinguish the makeup of the steel. The new F3125 specification is a consolidation and replacement of six ASTM standards, including; A325, A325M, A490, A490M, F1852, and F2280.

ASTM A490 this specification covers two types of quenched and tempered, alloy steel, heavy hex structural bolts having a tensile strength of 150 to 173 ksi. The bolts are furnished in sizes 1/2 to 1-1/2 in., inclusive. These bolts are intended for use in structural connections and therefore the thread length is shorter than standard hex bolts. ASTM A490 specification applies only to heavy hex structural bolts. When a protective coating is required and specified, the bolts shall be coated with Zinc/Aluminum Corrosion Protective Coatings in accordance with Specification F1136, Grade 3(commercially called Geomet), both chromium and non-chromium versions, or Specification F2833, Grade 1. These coatings have been qualified based on the findings of an investigation founded on IFI 144.
